The Soviet Metro system opened in Moscow in 1935

Ceiling mosaics (composite image) by Deyneka at Mayakovskaya Station, deidcated to the famous Russian poet Vladimir Myakovsky. Stalin once used it as an underground shelter and during WWII broadcasted radio messages from here to let the country know Moscow was in tact.
